The first records of St Martin’s, which claims to be named after a 4th century saint, date from 1222. He was born in Hungary circa 316 AD and later became a hermit and then Bishop of Tours (towers), in France. The government claims that Henry V111 paid for a new chapel to be built in 1543-44 this is another ‘error’. Parishioners paid for the work to be done. Things don’t change much. St Martin’s Day is called Martinmas and is celebrated on 11th of November. It is also the sacred day of Bacchus/Dionysus. It is also the day put aside to celebrate profits gained by the monstrous destruction wrecked upon the world by massive military conflagrations. But of course we are persuaded to think otherwise. James Gibb who had recently designed the church of St Mary-le-Strand, which was described by the Jacobite and Templar Grand Master, Earl Mar as ‘the most complete little damsel’, designed the present church of St Martin’s. On 19th March 1722 Sir Thomas Hewett and the Bishop of Salisbury who deputised for King George, the German speaking, and mostly absent monarch laid the foundation stone. (German George was also appointed churchwarden but surprisingly didn’t fulfil his duties, which provided an opportunity for those with their own agendas to use this important centre). [9] The environs of St Martin’s hosted an unusually high population of Scots probably because the Scottish kings had a palace nearby where Scotland Yard now stands. James Gibb was a Scot as were many other public figures of the time. Many were Templars and Masons; the two are probably at some levels one and the same. THE INVOLVEMENT OF FREEMASONS WITH ST MARTIN IN THE FIELDS The church seems to have close connections to Freemasonry. Many of its officers and parishioners were and may still be Freemasons. It is recorded in Anderson’s New Book of Constitutions of the Free and Accepted Masons (ed 1738): "St Martin’s in Campis was at the Charge of the Parishioners rebuilt strong and regular. And it being a Royal Parish Church, King George 1 sent his Lord Almoner and Surveyor General, attended by Brother Gibb (the Architect of that Grand Pile) with many Fre Masons, in a solemn Procession from the Place, to Level the Footstone of the South East Corner, by giving it 2 Great Knocks with a Mallet in the King’s Name, and laying upon it a Purse of 100 Guineas: when the Trumpets sounded, all join’d in joyful Acclamation, and the Craftsmen went to the Tavern to drink to the King and the Craft." The Inscription below was cut in the Stone and lead put upon it. (St Martin In The Fields New and Old by Katharine A Esdaile. Published 1944 Esdaile considered this Masonic involvement as highly unusual and attributed it to the architect, James Gibb. One of the Church’s schools, The Northern School in Castle Street was the first elementary school in England to have a Masonic Lodge, Unity and Progress No 3723 founded in 1914. JAMES GIBB James Gibb was a Freemason, a student of Christopher Wren (another Freemason) and Carlo Fontana in Italy. He was also a protégé of the Duke of Argyle, head of Scottish Rite Freemasonry. So what have Freemasons got to do with the Barrack Street Project? My contention is that they have a lot if not everything to do with it. Perth is I believe a Masonic capital. A walk around the city and very cursory research confirms this. Masonic capitals don’t just spring up anywhere. They have to meet important criteria. Geography, geometry and sacred science are all important factors in determining suitability. Your average plumber who goes down to the local lodge for a quick knee-flash wouldn’t know what the hell was going on. Freemasonry like many organizations is pyramidal; those at the bottom are unwitting participants in the agendas of those at the top. They may smugly believe that they are in on the secret but when you consider how many levels (at least 33) there are and each level reveals fresh secrets they are plainly kidding themselves.
