Weeklong Call For Unity And Independence Begins At 'Iolani Palace
Honolulu, Hawai'i - "Hawai'i Loa Ku Like Kakou," or "All Hawai'i Stand Together" is the theme of this week's gathering of Native Hawaiians as they converge to demand an end of US intervention and resumption of free nation status.
This Friday, January 17, marks the 110th anniversary of US intervention in the affairs of the internationally recognized and sovereign Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893 and subsequent illegal occupation by the US ever since.
"We are an occupied nation," states Mel Kalahiki, event organizer. "History now shows clearly that the Hawaiian Nation was not annexed, it was stolen."
In observance of the overthrow, the "Living Nation Campaign" has launched a weeklong slate of activities that began today, Monday, Jan. 13 with opening ceremonies at `Iolani Palace as well as a 110 hour vigil opposite Palace grounds.
Native Hawaiian activists and supporters are meeting this week in order to proclaim a unified, affirmative voice in their demand for the return of independence.
"We call on everyone to stand with us in our rendezvous with destiny," asserts Kalahiki. "An independent Hawaiian Nation will benefit all of us together, both Native Hawaiian and non-Native."
Activities for the week will culminate this Friday, Jan. 17 with a march to `Iolani Palace at 8 am, followed by a rally and evening torchlight march at 6 pm from Washington Place to `Iolani Palace.
