A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME

Dear Mr. Icke,

I am submitting to your news section an item that appeared in the January 21 issue of the English-language weekly newspaper called The Cyprus Weekly, published in Nicosia, Cyprus. I am also submitting a short commentary..

SMART CARD TO REPLACE ID

An electronic smart card will replace the current ID card issued by the Interior Ministry from June 1 (2000). The smart card, containing a microchip, will initially be used as an ID card, but later will be expanded to include information on driver's licences, refugee cards, voting, public health and social security as well as income tax.

The smart card will be issed in all districts and will be able to be used wherever there are government information terminals linked up to the central computer in the capital.

Interior Ministry official George Theodorou said the card would be issued to all new ID card applicants and citizens could swap their old cards for the new ones from June.

Until the old card is phased out both will be valid.

Citizens will not be required to take passport photographs with them as electronic cameras linked up to the computer terminals will be used, he said.

The cards will be replaced every five or ten years depending on the microchip used, he said.

A brief commentary:

As you may know, Cyprus has applied to join the European Union and has begun following EU-issued directives to change or modify many of its laws in conformity with EU protocols.

Cyprus was invaded and occupied by Turkish troops in 1974 following a failed coup the alleged purpose of which was to unite Cyprus with Greece - and is now divided. There are British bases in the Greek-speaking, southern part of the island, and a big American base in the northern, Turkish-occupied part. There is a UN 'peacekeeping' force on the island separating the two sides. Many Greek Cypriots claim that it was the American diplomat Henry Kissinger who orchestrated the events of 1974 in a perfect example of divide and rule, which has benefited British, Americans and Turkish interests at the expense of the local population, both Greek- and Turkish-speaking Cypriots, who are encouraged by their leaders to hate each other with patriotic fervour. But the Greek Cypriots in particular also detest the Americans and the British for their perceived role in the events - the riots that took place in Athens, Greece late last year when US President Bill Clinton stopped in for a brief visit are a perfect example.

There is a deep island-wide suspicion also that Freemasonry played and still plays a major role in the island's affairs and even helped orchestrate the coup and its intended aftermath, the invasion. Some commentators believe that Cyprus, having given up hope in American promises to 'solve the Cyprus problem' (because actually there never was any intention of solving the problem, as the problem was created by them!) is turning towards Europe in the misguided belief that the Europeans will eventually rid the island of the Turkish occupation once Cyprus becomes an EU member. In my opinion, it is rather more like a lamb going innocently to the slaughter...
