Nicosia, Cyprus, 25/02/2000.
Information indicates the existence of a spy relay station of Echelon in the British military installations in Cyprus.
The newspaper "I Mahi" with a main title "You have no business knowing what's going on in our bases!" reports that after the surge caused by the operational spy station Echelon, the authorities of the British military bases have yesterday published a report in which they are more or less cynically saying that "what we do in our bases shouldn't be anybody's business and we don't have to report to anyone".
Another newspaper, "O Politis", states in its main subject (which has a headline "Robberies from the sky") that the spy activities of the British stations extend much more farther than the borders of Cyprus.
"I Simerini" under the title "The New Watergate", reports that Cyprus is in the middle of a political scandal cyclone of global extend, which is similar to that of Watergate.
The English speaking paper "Cyprus Mail" reports that yesterday, the Cyprus Government Spokesman, while commenting on the spy action of the British in Cyprus, stated that "everybody knows that the British have radars in Cyprus", also adding that "what they really do, we don't know".
The weekly English speaking paper "Cyprus Weekly" in its main subject refers to the spy action of the British in Cyprus and also writes that the British have in their possession two terrestrial spy stations on the island, one located in Ayios Nikolaos and the other one in Akrotiri, both linked to a central station in Menwith Hill, North Yorkshire, UK.
