Big Brother -
coming to your house soon.

by: Steven Tuck

Stephen Lawrence was a 19 year old black man who was brutally murdered on Thursday 22.04.93 in an obviously cowardly, unprovoked racist attack in Eltham, South East London, UK whilst waiting for a bus. He was twice viciously stabbed and left to die in the street. Despite prolonged investigations, an aborted public prosecution and an attempted private prosecution, no one has been convicted of his murder or of any involvement in the attack on him.

Never has big brother rubbed our noses in the dirt as much as he did in the investigation into the murder of Stephen Lawrence. Whilst the public were debating the innocence or guilt of five men suspected of committing the crime Big Brother was blowing us kisses and swaggering towards the setting sun in victorious defiance.

This victory was all the more sweet for Big Brother because this time he had played with a change of tactics to test our perception of him. Instead of using the tried and tested methods of stealth and secrecy or lurking in the shadows and then quietly slipping away unnoticed, he jumped in front of our faces waving his arms and shouted ‘Hey look over here, it's me Big Brother, and I'm watching everything you do.'

And do you know what?

We didn't even see him.

Even though he was on every tevevision and radio news bulitin, we didn't see him.

Even though he was in every news paper, we didn't see him.

Even though we talked & talked about him down the pub, we didn't see him.

Even though Martin Bashir showed him to us in detail in an hour long television interview, we didn't see him.

After Stephen Lawrence was murdered, the names of five men were given to the police as possible suspects by ‘anonymous informants'. Now the botching of this investigation has reached legendary proportions and this has fueled much public debate. But this has hidden one very important issue. One of the things the police did whilst trying to obtain evidence to convict the five men was to install hidden cameras into their homes.

We all watched the products of one of these hidden cameras on our television sets. We all watched one of the men absesively playing around with a knife. We all watched one of the men apparently teaching another how best to use a knife to attack another person. And we all listened to how they were going to carry their knives when they went out to their local pub. We all watched Big Brother in operation in our very homes and we didn't even realise. How easy we have now become to manipulate.

I didn't know the police had the power to break into our homes and install hidden cameras. Then break in and take them out again (or are they still in there?) And if they do have such powers under what circumstances can they be used? This was no terrorist threat to national security - the usual reason for such gross violations of our civil rights. Let us not forget that the five men were only suspected of any involvement in the murder of Stephen Lawrence because of an ‘anonymous tip off' to the police. No other evidence!

I can see it now. You accidently carve someone up on your way to work in the rush hour traffic and the next thing you know (or rather don't know) your house is fitted out with more hidden cameras than the Paris Ritz because the disgruntled motorist has anonymously fingered you for that bank job in the high street last week.

I write this in an attempt to bring this matter into the public arena as I have talked to everybody I know about this case and not a single one of them picked up on the fact that the police are seemingly allowed to put hidden cameras into our houses. Surely I can't be the only person who has latched onto this.

Once again conspiracy theory
becomes conspiracy fact.

Steven Tuck
