Austin- "there ought to be limits to
freedom," said Texas Governor, George W.
Bush in reference to a satirical web site that
parodies his own.
The Web site www.gwbush.com was
initially registered by Zack Exley, a computer
consultant from Massachusetts. The site is
intended to poke fun at Bush's so called
"youthful indiscretions," and his apparent
transformation into a verified adult governor
who is proud of his tough-on crime policies.
George W. Bush
The site is filled with mock news articles
chronicling Bush's public "attempt 'to usher
in the responsibility era' " by turning himself
in for past drug usage. There are also real
letters from "prisoners of the drug war," as
well as links to various real articles and
other web sites on Bush.
Bush has filed a legal complaint with the
FCC regarding the site. A letter sent to the
FCC by his presidential exploratory
committee said, "it (the site) is filled with
libelous and untrue statements whose aim is
to damage Governor Bush."
They are requesting that the FCC require
the site to post a disclaimer identifying who
built the site and who is paying for it.
Their contention is that the site urges people to
vote against Bush, which makes it subject to federal
disclosure requirements.
The site makes no bones
about picking on Bush, but
makes no statements urging
voters to take any action for
or against Bush, thereby
exempting it from federal
rules. The complaint
however backfired on Bush,
in May the parody site
received well over 6,000,000
hits versus only 30,000 on
Bush's official site.
The site in my opinion is
humorous, fun and
interesting reading as
opposed to the spoon fed
pabulum on Governor
Bubba's.
