Austin - George W. Bush filed a legal
complaint with the FCC against the creators
of www.gwbush.com . And in a humorous
side note to his troubles with "anti-Bush"
web sites, the complaint backfired. It (the
complaint) only created more awareness for
the satirical site. In the month of May alone
the site received over 6,000,000 hits while
Bush's official site received only 30,000.
I performed a simple search of the dot com
directory at www.networksolutions.com for
the name of Bush's campaign political
consultant, Karl Rove. The search revealed
that Karl Rove & Co. registered 57 domain
names. Most had the name Bush in them or
in some way referred to the Governor. This
was done in an attempt to thwart the
creation of any more anti-Bush sites by
Internet free thinkers.
The list included such domain names as
www.bushsucks.com,
www.bushbites.com as well as more
appropriate names.
It is somewhat understandable that Bush
and his associates would buy up such
domain names, but to actually use them is
another matter.
All these domain names are linked to
Bush's official campaign site at
www.georgewbush.com. Just try typing into
your browser www.bushsux.com or .net for
that matter and see where it takes you.
"There ought to be limits to freedom," said Bush in a statement referring to www.gwbush.com.
The free expression of and
enactment upon a thought by one Zach Exley, the originator of
the satirical site has put himself at the center of this firestorm,
and Governor Bubba in the punchline of an extremely funny
moment in history.
